چکیده

Data storage systems are being called on to manage continuous media data types, such as digital audio and video. There is a demand by applications for \constrained-latency storage access" (CLSA) to such data: precisely scheduled delivery of data streams. We believe that anticipated quantitative improvements in processor and storage-device performance will not be su cient for current data management architectures to meet CLSA requirements. The need for high-volume (but high-latency) storage devices, high-bandwidth access and predictable throughput rates mean that standard latency-masking techniques, such as bu ering, are inadequate for the service demands of these applications. We examine the ways in which storage system architectures must change in order to provide CLSA on continuous media, taking into account operating system and network support as well as database management. Particular points we cover include { changes in the form of requests and responses at the applicationdatabase and database-OS interfaces { new kinds of abstractions and data independence that data mangement systems will need to supply, such as quality-of-service requests and mapping of domain events to OS events { e ects of CLSA demands on query optimization, planning and evaluation, including the need for accurate resource estimates and detailed schedules { new information requirements for the database system, such as better characterizations of storage subsystem performance and application patterns. We illustrate the problems and new demands of continuous media access with application requirements of an all-digital television production studio of the future. We conclude by presenting a storage architecture we are pursuing that we believe will support \scripted" CLSA to shared data. ? Improved Multimedia Server I/O Subsystems - Euromicro Conference, 1998. Proceedings. 24th

The main function of a continuous media server is to concurrently stream data from storage to multiple clients over a network. The resulting streams will congest the host CPU bus, reducing access to the system S main memory, which degrades CPUperformance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate ways of improving I/O subsystems of continuous media sewers. Several improved I/O subsystem archi...

On Evaluating the Cost-Performance Characteristics of Disk Storage Systems Supporting Continuous Media

Disk based storage systems serving continuous media content are evaluated using metrics such as startup latency, buffer size, and the number of concurrent streams. The design of a practical system must evaluate the tradeoffs among these parameters to achieve a target system performance while minimizing operational costs. In this paper, we describe a generic model that can be used for characteri...

Scheduling of Continuous Media for Real-Time Sessions

In multimedia DBMS, continuous media operations require constrained accesses to the storage system, which can vary unpredictably across users and application programs. To support real-time applications for continuous media, the storage system has to schedule the reservation of resources exclusively to guarantee time-dependent real-time retrieval, such as display. In addition, the system should ...

Simple Continuous Media Storage Server on Real-Time Mach

This paper presents the design and implementation of a simple continuous media storage server: CRAS on Real-Time Mach. CRAS is a specially optimized storage system for retrieving multiple continuous media streams such as audio and video from a disk at constant rates for small scale distributed multimedia systems. Many previous continuous media storage servers have focussed on high throughput fo...
